Waved Carpet Hydrelia sylvata

([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775)

Wingspan 27-30 mm.

Occupying damp woodland and plantations, this species is scarcely distributed throughout England and Wales, and rare in Ireland.

It flies in June and July, and the larvae feed on the young leaves of several trees, including alder (Alnus glutinosa), birch (Betula), and sallow (Salix).

A dusky-brown variation occurs in a restricted locality in Kent, and has been named ab. goodwini.
