Thanks, we identified our mystery moth very quickly from the top twenty list. It was a privet hawk moth that came out of its pupa on May 4th in the New Forest. (Which seems early as your site states they fly June / July).

please could you tell me how i can make a trap for catching moths in the night , as my children and I have become very interested in moths.

Wonderful site!

You deserve many thanks for a great effort. The simplicity of use of the site belies the amount of work, and to think we can now identify the micromoths hanging around / curled up in the nettles (Anthophila fabriciana). So, it's dead common but hey, we now know what it is. Off to check the Pyracantha for Phyllonorycter leucagraphella.

Cheers!

What an incredibly useful ID facility. Thank you Richard Bashford for putting me onto this, and thank you \"UK Moths\" for supplying the pix. Now I've discovered why my first Green Carpet was green whereas Skinner's photographic book shows one that is buff.

Excellent! Needed some info. on the 'Lime Hawk-moth' as I had not seen one before, the site being near Guildford College of F&HE, Surrey.
Thank you, R.P.

I must have used UK moths hundreds of times in the last 2 or 3 years, so it's about time I signed the visitors' book. Like most moth-ers, I find the site very useful. It's so good I have made it my home page.
Thanks, Leon.

have just seen what i think is a burnet moth in the middle of an area called Caldmore which is in Walsall west midlands, very black with red. the area is very built up and indusrial and it was a shock to see something so pretty around here. did'nt know what it was until i came on your site, i'm not a fan of moths but it was interesting to see, will keep a look out for it again.

Ian,

Impressive but could do with a few more illustrations. I think I can help with that.

Don't know much about moths but the website is terrific, really impressed with the speed, look and feel. If you are looking for some more sleepless nights would it be possible to set up a search facility by descriptive keywords?

regards
John

This site is, really, an excellent example of what the internet is all about. Specialist knowledge becomes public domain and moths become accessible and more interesting. Also, if you cannot find the information you seek, just ask. True interactivity.

Congratulations and thanks to Ian Kimber.

hi i was looking into your site to look for a certain type of moth which i have become particulalry interested in. I was pleased with amount of amazing moths and butterflies on your site, but you did not have any of these 'White Ermine' which are supposedly widely distributed in Britain, but more common to the south of England.
I was interested to see if you had any images anywhere else i can only seem to find smaller pictures and not reasonable size ones!
Thank you very much

Very useful for identifying all those pesky little caterpillarS I can't recognise!
Have added this page to the gardener's Favourites list and hope others will become as fascinated as I am...incidentally, you can add Laurus noblis to the foodplants of Carnation tortrix, I found the first adult of the season this morning.

I'm just starting with moths, saw the site recommended in an article on moths in Butterfly Conservation Magazine (82) and had a look. It looks as if I will become a regular user. Very impressive.I'll see how it works when I have just a description to work with.
